Well, as if we didn't have enough to worry about in the organic, and family farm movement, leave it up to our Government to mess things up.
Senate bill S. 510 is seen as a very controversial piece of legislation. There were provisions that would spell doom to the organic farm movement and those that use only heirloom seeds. The bill got side lined and everybody thought we were safe. Not so! Below is a link that will explain a lot more than I go in to here. If you are into organic gardening, etc. it is worth the read. An informed population is a politician's worst nightmare.

Chocolate & Blood pressure
It seems that once again we have evidence that theobromine, one of the active ingredients in chocolate, can help with blood pressure. In an article published in Hypertension, a peer reviewed journal, indicates that the theobromine can help with blood pressure, but can't do what is needed in most cases.
The information can help us understand why eating chocolate alone will not be effective in blood pressure control. Clinically we have used the Pure Encapsulations product Vascular Relax BP for some time and found it to be an effect adjunct in blood pressure control. One of the active ingredients in VRBP is the cocoa extract talked about in the article. It also has other ingredients that help in the synergy of the product.
So, what do we take from this article? You can't just eat chocolate and lower your blood pressure.

Holiday Season tips
I always like to provide some tips for navigation of the Holiday season.
Tip #
1. Don't over eat, there are always leftovers to come back too.
2. Slow down and enjoy the season. You'll probably see folks that you haven't seen in some time, so enjoy the moments.
3. If you are out shopping, be aware of your surroundings. Criminals like this time of year as everyone is preoccupied and that makes you an easy target.
4. If you wait until the last minute it reduces the choices you have to make. It's a guy thing.
5. Don't over eat. Can't say that one too often.
6. Dress appropriately for the weather. Don't want to be cold or too hot. Both are stressful.
7. Always give to those less fortunate. It will make their Holiday more joyful and makes you feel good too.
8. Think about New Years resolutions that you can keep and not something that just sounds good.
9. Don't over eat. Oh, already said that one. It is a good one to remember though.
10. Slow down and enjoy the Season..............Dr.Jim

Great new movie that everyone needs to watch, Food, Inc. It is a tell all truth about the food industry in America. I promise that you will be more conscious about what you eat after watching. It is only about 1&1/2 hr, so take the time to watch.
More info coming out about "background pollution". This is the pollution that we can't hide from. It is everywhere, in the food supply, water and air. Especially the foods. Watch the movie.
So many of these pollutants are being found to interfere with thyroid function. This makes sense from all the thyroid problems we are seeing. Many of the pollutants block the TSH for actually making the thyroid do what it is supposed to do and others interfere with the thyroid hormones doing their job. It's a crazy world we live in.
All this makes detoxifying the body that much more important.
Watch the movie!!!!!

Ever wonder about things that get researched? Just read where Temple University just published a nice article on methionine, an amino acid found in red meats, beans, eggs, garlic, lentils, yogurt and some other tasty foods linked to Alzheimers's.
THey found that the diet rich in this particular amino acid could lead to the development of the dreaded Alzheimer's disease. It is nice to know that this can happen and now we understand the mechanism. When we consume too much mewthionine it can be metabolissed into homocysteine leading to a condition called hyperhomocysteinemia. Hyperhomocysteinemia will cause the development of Amyloid B placque which is associated with Alzheimer's. So far so good.
By now you have decided to never eat anything good for you again. A diet rich in trans fats, fried foods and loaded with sugar should suffice. At least you might not get Alzheimer's, right? Not so fast.
Yes hyperhomocysteinemia is not good, that is a fact. High homocysteine levels are also associated with heart disesae. But, what can be done? we suggest having your homocysteine tested and take appropriate action if it is high. So, what is this action, you ask? Vitmains B12 and folic acid.
This brings me to a great book that everyone should read, The Homocysteine Revolution by Kilmer S. McCully, M.D. THis book offers great insight into medicine and polotics.
Back on track here, what the research shows, but did not say, is that we need to be concerned about our homocysteine levels and keep them as low as we can. We like to see levels below 8, however the range goes as high as 15 or so and if you ask you doctor about the level he or she will tell you you are ok if you are at a level of 13 or more. We always suggest testing th homocystenie levels and keeping them below that 8 atleast. Especially when somehting as simple as B12 and folic acid can be the answer.
I suppose the reason the researchers did not talk about that is that now they can do another project to find the way to lower the homocysteine levels. wonder how much that will cost, you know, to find out something we already know.

Holiday wind down
Holiday season 2009 is shaping up to be one of our busiest ever. We are now winding down for a few days of to celebrate Thanks Giving. It is a much needed few days off for sure.
Things have been crazy busy in the natural medicine world. So many people worried about the flu season and all the hubbub about 'Health Care Reform' has folks rethinking health.
Recently we have had many come in with lab work that their doctors have done for them and have told them that 'everything is fine'. One in particular lady began telling us that she had all sorts of tests and 'everything was fine', although she had several complaints that she wanted us to help with. We suggested that she get a copy of the tests since they were recent. A day or so later she came in with her labs and we were surprised to find '9' things flagged hi or low. She was perturbed since she had been told 'all was fine'. Nine things out of range is not 'everything is fine'. We pointed this out and offered suggestions as to help with the problems that she had. Another happy camper.
We hear much about this Health Care reform and are asked our position to which we respond it is not health care reform, just reform on who pays for it. Actually, here in America, we do not have health care, but disease management. Actual health care is left up to the individual. Our position is simple, we are not going to have true health care reform until we change the way medicine is taught in America. Currently it is simply a drug for the symptoms and disregard for the cause.
Our hope is that we all have a great Thanks Giving holiday and visit many family and friends. We all need the camaraderie.

Busy day in the natural health world. For the past few days we have seen way too many people who have brought their labs in from other doctors and have been told that "everything looks fine". Not so. Today there was a lady that was told "everything was fine" and there were 9 things flagged out of range! Needless to say, she was not happy when she discovered that many things out of range. The prescription, anti-depressants.
Episodes like this are the reason we do what we do, help you be your best advocate in health matters. Never take the doctor's office word that "everything is fine" without seeing the result for your self. And be willing to challenge things when you see things flagged as out of range. Something that may seem simple and not life threatening may cause problems even though it will not kill you.
That's all for now, back latter.
