Resveratrol

By now you have heard of or read about resveratrol and how it is the youthful elixir promising eternal life. Oh, you haven't heard about resveratrol?

It seems that the Internet is buzzing with all kinds of info, some good some, well questionable, about resveratrol. As many of may have read resveratrol is usually equated with red wine and grape extracts and that is true. When one looks further into resveratrol we find that a heck of a lot of plants produce this stuff. Actually it seems that the more invasive the plant the more resveratrol it produces.

If you peruse the real research that has been done and that is being done on resveratrol it is a truly amazing compound. Its ability to reduce radical oxygen species, its anti-oxidant capabilities, is one of the best in the world so far. Who knows what might be just around the corner.

Back to resveratrol. Now that science is investigating resveratrol we are finding many of its cousins that were here to fore unknown. Things like pterostilbene, and piceatannol. All these compounds fall into a class that chemists call flavonoids or stilbenes. The amount of anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-cancer information stemming from this research is incredible.

Personally and clinically we have used resveratrol for well over 10 years and some of the results we have seen are unbelievable for sure. We suggest it for so many conditions now that some would see it as a miracle indeed. Although it will not make you loose weight, darn. I am going to be adding more about this wonder herb in the near future. If you have any questions or concerns give us a call at 800-824-0194. If you have had great results we would like to hear about them too.
As always, yours in health!

Cave Man diet

Hi All,
For many years I have suggested that we need to eat like a 'cave man', thus the cave man diet. Now it has a more correct name; The Paleo Diet.

There are many advocates of this eating style and many authors that have capitolized on the marketing with books, etc. My favorite is "The Paleo Diet" by Loren Cordain, PhD. Dr. Cordain has done a very good job of describong the diet and the 'whys' surrounding it. For those of a technical bent, you will be amazed at the varying research on the subject and supporting evidence surrounding the life style.

Our method of emplementing this life style is simply to remove any and all grains form the diet. Yes, this means no cereals for breakfast either. Also, you are going to want to be careful of starchy root vegetables, i.e. potatoes, etc.

Having done this ourselves and with many patients and watching the results, we are convinced, and have much evidence to back this up, that modern man needs to change his or her ways. What with 30% plus of the population classified as diebetic and anothe 20% plus on the way, metabolic symdrome, things have to change, and soon.

Stay tuned as there will be much more on this subject to come.

Yours in health,
Dr. Jim

Big food on the attack, again

Well, as if we didn't have enough to worry about in the organic, and family farm movement, leave it up to our Government to mess things up.

Senate bill S. 510 is seen as a very controversial piece of legislation. There were provisions that would spell doom to the organic farm movement and those that use only heirloom seeds. The bill got side lined and everybody thought we were safe. Not so! Below is a link that will explain a lot more than I go in to here. If you are into organic gardening, etc. it is worth the read. An informed population is a politician's worst nightmare.

Stay informed.

Chocolate & Blood pressure

It seems that once again we have evidence that theobromine, one of the active ingredients in chocolate, can help with blood pressure. In an article published in Hypertension, a peer reviewed journal, indicates that the theobromine can help with blood pressure, but can't do what is needed in most cases.

The information can help us understand why eating chocolate alone will not be effective in blood pressure control. Clinically we have used the Pure Encapsulations product Vascular Relax BP for some time and found it to be an effect adjunct in blood pressure control. One of the active ingredients in VRBP is the cocoa extract talked about in the article. It also has other ingredients that help in the synergy of the product.

So, what do we take from this article? You can't just eat chocolate and lower your blood pressure.

Holiday Season tips

I always like to provide some tips for navigation of the Holiday season.

Tip #

1. Don't over eat, there are always leftovers to come back too.

2. Slow down and enjoy the season. You'll probably see folks that you haven't seen in some time, so enjoy the moments.

3. If you are out shopping, be aware of your surroundings. Criminals like this time of year as everyone is preoccupied and that makes you an easy target.

4. If you wait until the last minute it reduces the choices you have to make. It's a guy thing.

5. Don't over eat. Can't say that one too often.

6. Dress appropriately for the weather. Don't want to be cold or too hot. Both are stressful.

7. Always give to those less fortunate. It will make their Holiday more joyful and makes you feel good too.

8. Think about New Years resolutions that you can keep and not something that just sounds good.

9. Don't over eat. Oh, already said that one. It is a good one to remember though.

10. Slow down and enjoy the Season..............Dr.Jim

Great new movie that everyone needs to watch, Food, Inc. It is a tell all truth about the food industry in America. I promise that you will be more conscious about what you eat after watching. It is only about 1&1/2 hr, so take the time to watch.

More info coming out about "background pollution". This is the pollution that we can't hide from. It is everywhere, in the food supply, water and air. Especially the foods. Watch the movie.

So many of these pollutants are being found to interfere with thyroid function. This makes sense from all the thyroid problems we are seeing. Many of the pollutants block the TSH for actually making the thyroid do what it is supposed to do and others interfere with the thyroid hormones doing their job. It's a crazy world we live in.

All this makes detoxifying the body that much more important.

Watch the movie!!!!!

Ever wonder about things that get researched? Just read where Temple University just published a nice article on methionine, an amino acid found in red meats, beans, eggs, garlic, lentils, yogurt and some other tasty foods linked to Alzheimers's.

THey found that the diet rich in this particular amino acid could lead to the development of the dreaded Alzheimer's disease. It is nice to know that this can happen and now we understand the mechanism. When we consume too much mewthionine it can be metabolissed into homocysteine leading to a condition called hyperhomocysteinemia. Hyperhomocysteinemia will cause the development of Amyloid B placque which is associated with Alzheimer's. So far so good.

By now you have decided to never eat anything good for you again. A diet rich in trans fats, fried foods and loaded with sugar should suffice. At least you might not get Alzheimer's, right? Not so fast.

Yes hyperhomocysteinemia is not good, that is a fact. High homocysteine levels are also associated with heart disesae. But, what can be done? we suggest having your homocysteine tested and take appropriate action if it is high. So, what is this action, you ask? Vitmains B12 and folic acid.

This brings me to a great book that everyone should read, The Homocysteine Revolution by Kilmer S. McCully, M.D. THis book offers great insight into medicine and polotics.

Back on track here, what the research shows, but did not say, is that we need to be concerned about our homocysteine levels and keep them as low as we can. We like to see levels below 8, however the range goes as high as 15 or so and if you ask you doctor about the level he or she will tell you you are ok if you are at a level of 13 or more. We always suggest testing th homocystenie levels and keeping them below that 8 atleast. Especially when somehting as simple as B12 and folic acid can be the answer.

I suppose the reason the researchers did not talk about that is that now they can do another project to find the way to lower the homocysteine levels. wonder how much that will cost, you know, to find out something we already know.

Later,
Dr. Jim
